This pleasant excursion leads downhill along the southern slopes of Altipiano del Grostè, through mountain meadows and fir woods and across impetuous water courses heading down to the valley floor.

The panorama that accompanies trekkers along the first part of the descent is enchanting: in the foreground you can see the Brenta Group, while Cima Presanella, the Carè Alto chain and the Cevedale Group are in the background. Another key feature of this itinerary is water, which reigns supreme in the last leg of the trek, dominated by the suggestive upper Vallesinella waterfalls, with their numerous bridges, steps and jets of water.

Turn-by-turn directions

Exiting from the uphill station of the Grostè cableway (2440 m), turn right downhill, along SAT trail No. 301, walking westwards. The descent along SAT trail No. 301 follows the cableway service road to Rifugio Graffer, which can already be seen from the cableway uphill station.

At Rifugio G. Graffer al Grostè (2263 m) you can see, on the south-east side of the building (near the flags), the SAT signs indicating trail No. 382, which continues downhill towards Vallesinella.

Cross the ski piste and continue through the characteristic Dossi del Grostè.

The trail bends gradually left to the south; the first part runs through the broad meadows located between Rifugio Graffer and Malga Boch, after which, at the change in incline between the Dossi and the Vallesinella valley floor, it starts descending along the Coste di Vallesinella slopes, across steep broad meadows interspersed with rocky walls.

The trail develops down a small grassy valley which, on the west side of Corna Rossa, descends parallel to the rock face in the direction of the large Stablei hollow.

After reaching the floor of the small valley, down a winding path with numerous cross stretches, the trail bends right across the Coste di Vallesinella, in a south-west direction.

From here it gradually enters the wood, which becomes thicker and thicker, with tall trees, until you exit into a field uphill from Malga di Vallesinella di Sopra (1681 m).

Follow the trail, which runs downhill from the mountain dairy, and then, at the second SAT sign you come to (crossroads) turn left and descend in the direction of the Cascate Alte (upper waterfalls).

Cross the field to the south-west of the mountain dairy, and you find another sign right on the edge of the wood. Descend into the wood. From here, the most beautiful and characteristic stretch of the entire itinerary begins, i.e. the stretch of the Cascate Alte (Upper Waterfalls) of Vallesinella. Be careful here because the trail is exposed at certain points.

After a series of hairpin bends, bridges and steep stretches, the trail descends amidst the jets and streams of water down 100 metres in a very short space.

At the bottom of the falls, cross the torrent with the umpteenth bridge and, once you’ve taken yourself to the right bank of the torrent, continue along a more comfortable trail coasting the torrent, which now pleasantly winds on gentler ground.

At the Rifugio Tuckett cableway the trail turns into a road, which leads after a few minutes to the car park and Rifugio Vallesinella (at 1513 m).

Getting there

Go to the northern edge of the town of Madonna di Campiglio, between Campo Carlo Magno and the town itself, where the Grostè Cableway starts (on the east side of the road). Here there’s a car park for a fee. Take the cableway to the uphill station of the Grostè Cableway – Rifugio Stoppani (2440 m).
