Safety information

  • Prepare your itinerary beforehand
  • Choose an itinerary that suits your physical abilities
  • Choose suitable clothes and equipment
  • Check the weather forecast
  • Hiking by yourself is more risky; if this is the case, take a mobile phone with you
  • Leave information about your itinerary and your expected return time
  • If you are not sure about your itinerary, contact an Alpine Guide
  • Pay attention to signposts and directions that you find along your way
  • Do not hesitate in going back if you feel too tired
  • In case of emergency call 112

Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Equipment

Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.

What you should have in your rucksack:

  • water canteen (1L)
  • snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate)
  • First aid kit
  • windproof jacket
  • fleece
  • change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag)
  • make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers
  • hat
  • sun screen
  • sunglasses
  • gloves
  • whistle to attract attention in an emergency
  • emergency telephone number Mountain Rescue 112

Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains.

And finally... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views.

Turn-by-turn directions

The starting place is at Valda cross (small car park) in the upper half of the village. After a short asphalt stretch, a paved road climbs towards 'Passo Potzmauer – Sentiero E5' and, as it enters a mixed forest, becomes a dirt road. At the first crossroads, bear north along an uphill path; at the next fork, follow the sign for 'Masi di Grumes–Baita Penna Nera–Pra' del Manz'. You are now on Valle di Cembra's botanical and naturalistic path of the Dossone di Cembra. All along the trail, there are various posters illustrating the many types of plants that can be found in the area. The path joins a forest road and you cross a small wooden bridge over a stream (Rio dei Peci). After a short stretch characterized by the presence of drystone walls and man-made terraces, you soon reach Cappella dei Poieri, then Maso Noldi-Forni (1058 m), and finally Casel dei Masi. Carry on towards Rifugio Potzmauer past the small church and characteristic rural dwellings of the hamlet of Giovanni. A few dozens of metres outside the hamlet, leave the road and take the path to the mountain hut. From Rifugio Potzmauer, follow the E5 trail (European long-distance path E5) in the direction of Lago Santo until you reach a crossroads with a tractor road to Noval-Bornie-Valda: leave the E5 trail (which heads towards Zise-Ponciach) in order to follow that road. When you reach the biotope 'Prati di Monte', take the road to Zise-Ponciach. It undulates gently through the wetland area of another biotope called 'Lago di Valda'. The forest road now heads south and downhill. At the first crossroads, turn right into a dirt road in order to climb to a panoramic spot: the summit of Monte Castion (1531 m; the last stretch of the climb runs along a path). From there, retrace your steps to return to the forest road you left earlier. At the crossroads, turn right and continue your downhill walk, heading south. Carry on towards Lovara–Bornie–Pra' del Manz, leaving the road to Lago Santo. After a few hundred metres, turn right into the tractor road running downhill through a wood of beeches and oaks. The road soon becomes a path which then joins a forest road. A signpost invites you to wander briefly from the road into a sidetrack which takes you to a panoramic spot over the Dosso di Segonzano and the Upper Valle di Cembra. You then proceed past the Pecedel pond. When you reach the 'Sass de la Peca' locality, bear right and carry on downhill towards Bornie and from there back to the starting place
