Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the town hall of Baselga, follow the main road in the direction of Trento for about a hundred metres, then take the first tarmac road on your left. After a few dozens of metres, turn right into a small road that makes a circle around the Dosso di Vigo. Follow it until it joins a tarmac road which takes you to the village of Vigo. Before you go down to the village square, we recommend you make a detour along the mule path on your left to the church of San Giuseppe and the panoramic hill on which it stands. Carry on across Vigo along gently undulating tarmac roads until a place called 'Ferrari'. From there keep going straight ahead until the tarmac road becomes a dirt road. This is where the circular walk around the Laghestel biotope begins. Although a map invites you to walk anticlockwise round Laghestel, feel free to go clockwise if you prefer. Laghestel is one of the 68 biotopes of major interest to be found in Trentino. In ancient times, the Laghestel basin was occupied by a 20-metre-deep lake. As the result of a natural process, the lake has slowly turned into a peat bog. From 1600 onwards, various drainage attempts were made. These included the digging of drainage channels which increased the speed at which the lake surface had been naturally shrinking. Nowadays, the lake occupies the area where the basin is at its deepest. It covers an area of 6,000 m², is 90 metres across and has a maximum depth of 2.5 metres.

Equipment

Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.

What you should have in your rucksack:

  • water canteen (1L)
  • snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate)
  • First aid kit
  • windproof jacket
  • fleece
  • change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag)
  • make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers
  • hat
  • sun screen
  • sunglasses
  • gloves
  • whistle to attract attention in an emergency
  • emergency telephone number Mountain Rescue 112

Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains.

And finally... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views.
