Hidden Treasures: The Chestnut Trail
This trail runs around the vale of Campi, a small mountain hamlet outside Riva del Garda: the focus of the walk are the monumental chestnut trees which have dominated this landscape for hundreds of years.
This is a hike in the form of a loop which joins up five of the chestnut groves in the Campi district, immersed in a lush green vale between Monte Tombio and Monte Parì.
Campi - subdivided into a more densely populated centre and small clusters of houses which often bear the name of local families – is a hamlet which belongs to the municipality of Riva del Garda, nestled in a sheltered vale at the feet of the mountains. Situated on the road which connects Garda Trentino, Valle di Ledro and Giudicarie, the area has been inhabited and contested since before Roman times thanks to its strategic position. Today it is along the route of many hiking and mtb trails which wind along tracks and forestry roads in the surrounding woods.
A gastronomic stopoff point you can't afford to miss after the hike is Capanna Grassi, a mountain hut you can also get to by car which serves traditional local food which is wholesome and tasty.
