Patone grotto - Bus del Diaol
The time necessary to visit this cave is about 2 hours, it is necessary to be accompanied by expert guides
The time necessary to visit this cave is about 2 hours plus 2 or 3 hours´ work to clear the siphon, if it is clogged with sand, and thus go into the second part. Visitors need speleological equipment. In the area called La Moletta, near San Martino a Patone and the mountain farmhouse Maso delle Giare, at an altitude of 225 metres above sea-level, there is a gravel quarry. Here, visitors have to follow the fencing of the quarry and, looking at the signs, at the end of the quarry, they find a canyon (dry stream). The cave begins at the end of this canyon. The first part is about 750 metres deep. Then there is a siphon, which is usually clogged with sand, unless someone has already gone through it. Anyway, it is possible to take the sand away, using the appropriate equipment and working for about 2-3 hours, and go into the second part, which is the loveliest. Its length is about 750-800 metres. The cave, which can be visited only with guides, is the result of the erosive action of a stream. The water coming out of the entrance - this phenomenon has now disappeared - frightened the inhabitants of the valley, who thought it was caused by the Devil, as the name of the cave testifies.
