From Fuchiade to Forcella Predazzo in the heart of the Fassa Dolomites
The Dolomites are the backdrop and main ingredient in this truly satisfying, partly high altitude route
After crossing Passo San Pellegrino (where there was a Monk's Hospice for assisting pilgrims and travellers in the 13th century) follow the main road for a few hundred metres towards Falcade and take the unsurfaced road to the left for the Fuchiade mountain hut (signposted) about 4 km away. Carry on through the broad fields dotted with wooden 'baita' mountain huts in the green valley of Fuchiade (the name comes from 'fauciar' - to cut the grass in Ladino), at the foot of the peaks of the Costabella Chain, Cima dell'Uomo and Sasso di Valfredda mountains. You come to the mountain hut-restaurant and then, after crossing a little bridge, a cattle track on level ground takes you through the fields to the edge of the woods where a ski slope comes out and runs downhill as far as the road to Rifugio Flora Alpina. Here you begin the descent towards Falcade following the signposts which bring you to the houses of the hamlet of Somor and then the Sega bridge over the river Biois
The route now turns towards Passo Valles, another Dolomite pass between the provinces of Trento and Belluno. The ascent is about 1,000 m. in just over 7 km of asphalt road, a really good pedal. Almost in sight of the pass you turn to the right onto a white road (signposted for the Laresei restaurant) which goes uphill to Forcella Pradazzo passing the Malga of the same name. You come to a large boulder of porphyry bearing the words San Pellegrino and further on the Corda degli Zingari. The descent to the pass needs some care and may require you to dismount for some sections until you come to the Col Margherita ski slope. At a ramp (near a broad bend to the left) you take a road which leads to Pale di Gargol and proceed with the descent, at times difficult on account of the surface and steepness, and ends up in the carpark of the cablecar station from which you can shortly reach Passo San Pellegrino.
