To reach the Ernesto cave, take the State Road SS 47 "della Valsugana" as far as Primolano (VI), then the road for Enego
and finally that for Frizzone as far as Stivai where cars can be parked at the Trattoria-Bar from where a half hour hike along a small forest road leads into Val d´Antenne. The Grotta di Ernesto is a karst cave, created by the erosive action of underground waters on the solid dolomite limestone. Its entrance is located at an altitude of 1,130 m on the steep eastern slope of Colle dei Mineghini, between Val d´Antenne and Val dei Brentoni, on the Altopiano della Marcesina. It is straight and about 65 m long. The vault reaches the maximum height of 3-4 m. After the narrow entrance a 15-m-long underground passage, whose floor is covered with calcareous stones fallen from the vault because of the action of frost and thaw, slopes down as far as the large "Sala del Focolare" (Hall of the fireplace), with many stalagmitic concretions and small stalactites. Another passageway ends in the "Sala Grande", characterized by a beautiful stalagmitic fall stretching as far as the level area below. From here a narrow passage leads into a small side cave, called "Camera della Torcia" which is 4 m long. The cave was discovered in autumn 1983 during the construction of a forest road and was named after the boy who entered the narrow passage first at the moment of the discovery. The research carried out in the cave has revealed that the structure was frequented by groups of prehistoric human beings.
