Weather

The XII Apostoli basin is situated at the foot of two small glaciers (Pratofiorito and Agola) in a spot of outstanding natural beauty. Rifugio XII Apostoli is located on a panoramic dolomitic outcrop at the western end of that basin. The view from there is extraordinary: it extends from the Dolomites peaks of Cima XII Apostoli, Pratofiorito and Agola to those of the Presanella massif to the west.

The XII Apostoli basin is the western access to the heart of the Dolomiti di Brenta and is characterized by tranquillity and an absence of crowds. The scenery is magnificent and harmonious, but the access route is rather strenuous, and that’s what keeps the crowds away. The tranquillity one enjoys on the various paths that start from the refuge makes this place even more fascinating.

The hut is the starting point of a labyrinth of paths, all of them extremely interesting: trail 307 for Val Nardis; trail 341 for Val di Sacco; ‘Sentiero Attrezzato dell’Ideale Bocca’ (a fixed-rope trail marked 304); ‘Bocca dei Camosci e d’Ambiez’; ‘Via delle Bocchette’; Ferrata ‘Ettore Castiglioni’ (another fixed-rope trail marked 321) ‘Bocca dei Due Denti’.

Author’s recommendation

Although the fixed-rope section known as ‘Scala Santa’ is not especially difficult, caution is required   when ascending as well as when descending it. We advise you to wait until other hikers have completed their ascent/descent before starting your own in order to avoid meeting them in exposed places where giving way might prove awkward and/or dangerous.

Turn-by-turn directions

There are two possible starting places: either Doss del Sabion at an altitude of 2100 m (which can be reached by ski lift from Pinzolo) or Malga Movlina at an altitude of 1786 m (which can be reached by car from the Giudicarie Esteriori via the Val d’Algone).

Whichever solution you choose, you must follow one of two trails (either 357 from Doss del Sabion or 354 from Malga Movlina) that converge near Passo Bregn de L’Ors (1845 m). From there, proceed on trail 307.

With a few undulations, trail 307 takes you to the green basin of Lago Asciutto, where the bottom station of the cable car to Rifugio XII Apostoli is situated. After a flattish stretch, the path climbs in earnest towards a fissure across a rocky barrier. The fixed-rope section of the climb is known as ‘Scala Santa’ (Holy Stairs). At the top, proceed transversely across a moraine at the foot of the needles of Cime di Nardis, visible to the left.

This is the prelude to the final stretch of the route characterized by a succession of rocky outcrops and shelves. Make sure you stick scrupulously to the well-beaten and marked path because otherwise you run the risk of suddenly facing dangerous fissures in the rocks.

After a last effort, you arrive at the foot of the platform where the refuge is situated. To reach it, follow the SAT signage. Once there (2489 m), it is definitely time for a well-deserved rest. Stunning views.

Return to the starting place by the same route.

Getting there

Access to Rifugio XII Apostoli is from the west. There are four possible starting places, the first two being the most logical ones:
  • Doss del Sabbion from the ski lifts ‘Pinzolo – Val Rendena’, from there along trail 357 up to Passo Bregn da L’Ors (1845 m) where you take trail 307. This is the easiest access route. It also takes you to the highest starting place.
  • Malga Movlina (1786 m) from the Giudicarie via the Val d’Algone; leave your vehicle at the car park just before the malga; follow trail 354 till it joins trail 307 near Passo Bregn de L’Ors (1845 m).
  • Malga Bandalors (1626 m) from Val Rendena. Follow trail 307 from start to finish.
  • Val Agola from Sant’Antonio di Mavignola – Val Rendena. Follow trail 324 up to Lago Asciutto (1915 m); from there, proceed on trail 307.
