Weather

The route climbs from the Val San Nicolò, a beautiful side valley of the Val di Fassa, to the green pastures of Baffaure, a botanical garden created not by man, but by Nature. The scenery is magnificent and the views of the Catinaccio range, Valacia and, especially, Costabella are unique. The outlook over the Val San Nicolò down below is stunning.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Sauch (1737 m), proceed along the path which branches off from the car park.

An obvious signpost is placed on the wooden hut situated on the left, i.e. on the lower margin of a large meadow. The beginning of the path is next to the ‘No vehicles allowed’ sign. The trail crosses the meadow diagonally and enters a wood. It then follows a narrow mule path which climbs into dense wood.

The mule path soon becomes a well-beaten, obvious track. It climbs further into the wood with a few zigzags, gaining height rather rapidly. At spot height 1835 m, the path divides: ignore the fork to the left (signposted for ‘sot i maerins’) and proceed further uphill on the same track. After a while, the path traverses a slope leftwards. The view from the meadows becomes more and more scenic. After passing a panoramic spot on the left (sign), you are greeted by the vivid green pastures of Baffaure di Sopra. It’s time for a rest at the nearby Baita Cuz (2195 m).

This spot is a balcony with unique views of the Catinaccio range, Valacia, Costabella, Valle di San Nicolò and Valle dei Monzoni.

Return to the starting place by the same route.

Getting there

The start of this walk is at the car park of Sauch (1737 m) in Val San Nicolò, a lovely side valley of the Val di Fassa . In order to get there, follow SS48 (Valli di Fiemme e Fassa national road ) up to Pozza di Fassa and then branch off onto the road for Val San Nicolò. Follow that road further into the valley past the restaurants-cum-refuges Soldanella and Crocefisso right up to the car park (parking fee payable).
Arrival by train, car, foot or bike
