Snowshoe trek to Monte Cola
Snowshoeing • Valsugana, Lagorai, Vigolana and Valle dei Mocheni
Overlooking the Valsugana valley, we propose a sunny and panoramic route along gentle slopes with a final stretch leading along a crest which gives the entire excursion a truly Alpine feel.
The slopes above the town of Roncegno are amongst the most beautiful of the entire Valsugana, with dozens of farmsteads and mountain lodges dotting the land between the pastures and chestnut forests.
This is a very popular itinerary and takes you, without too much difficulty, to a truly rewarding and panoramic summit.
On your return trip you can always stop at the “Serot” mountain hut or the “Le Pozze” bar and restaurant, both of which offer fine food.
At an elevation of 1,900 metres, once you’ve entered the Val d'Ilba, you’ll come across an abandoned mountain lodge which is the ideal spot for a short break.
The route is not completely free from avalanche risk so current local conditions must be checked before departure. It’s better to avoid the upper reaches of the itinerary (above 1,800 metres) in the case of fog or low cloud cover as it presents very few reference points and orientation may become a problem.
Remember, snowpack stability is subject to sudden and unforeseeable changes and shifts. Always check the local avalanche bulletin (www.meteotrentino.it or any other service that suits your needs) before departure and make sure you gather all possible information concerning current conditions from the local Mountain Guides (www.mountime.it). GPS tracks are merely indicative of the more standard routes but must not be followed blindly without first checking current slope and terrain conditions.
For all snowshoe treks, suitable apparel is strongly recommended. Temperatures can dip quickly and so garments should be warm and also be suitable for snowy conditions (such as waterproof Gore-Tex jackets). Furthermore, every group member should pack gloves, a cap, sun glasses and sun cream.
It’s also important to bear in mind that tight-fitting or insufficiently waterproof footwear can lead to frostbite.
We also strongly recommend that all members of the group pack an avalanche rescue kit consisting of avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel (this is also available for rent).
Ski poles can also come in quite useful and are therefore recommended.
In the case of icy snow, it is recommended adding a pair of crampons to your gear.
Tips, hints and links
Take the SP65 road from Roncegno in the direction of Ronchi Valsugana until you reach the fork with sign-posts for “Le Pozze” restaurant and “Rifugio Serot”. The road that takes you up is paved butu rather narrow and can be particularly troublesome in the case of snow: make sure you have snow chains on board.
