Monte Roen, the main elevation of the Monti Anauni range, features gentle and relaxing slopes in the west and tall vertical rock faces in the east. Its peaceful western side offers this nice and long trek along a climb that becomes immediately demanding but is well worth the effort thanks to the wonderful view enjoyed at the summit.

Turn-by-turn directions

Park in the car park of Malga Romeno and walk along the dirt road that accesses the group of buildings standing opposite, in a western direction.

Shortly below the mountain dairy, to the right, where SAT signs are located, is the trail that climbs steeply along the northern side of Monte Roen.

Trail No. 500 ascends steeply from the start and after a first section in meadows it enters the forest.

There is not much to say about the trail. You will meet only one crossroads along the way and you must proceed straight ahead until you exit the forest into the large summit meadow dotted with large mugo pines.

In the high altitude stretch, grassy sections will alternate with sections through large mugo pine copses until you arrive at the peak that is landmarked by a large red metal monolith.

The summit of Monte Roen (2116 m a.s.l.) once bore a crucifix, since removed.

Further down towards the valley several Madonnas gaze out onto the last section of the climb upwards towards the summit.

Retrace your steps to return to the departure point.

Getting there

Get to the town of Amblar (near Romeno) in the upper Val di Non.

Enter the town and take Via Roen, to the left.

The street exists the town in a northern direction and starts climbing up the long and wide western slope of Monte Roen (sign for Rifugio Roen, another name for the Romeno mountain dairy).

The road is about 11 km long and tarmac for more than half its length. While on your way uphill, ignore the crossroads with secondary roads.

Once out of the forest, you will see the pasture and the car park of Malga Romeno (Rifugio Roen).
