Check the gears. That’s our recommendation if you want to take on the Gardeccia. A climb with steep slopes that leaves no room for improvisation.  Although short, measuring just over 6 km, it has walls at 17% and an average slope of 10 percent.

Turn-by-turn directions

The climb is a sequence of jolts, especially in the first stretch. It starts from Pera di Fassa and the first kilometre suggests you ought to take the climb seriously. You have to climb nimbly, so that you don’t tire the legs and pay the price of overdoing it towards the end. The scenery is majestic, but you have very little time to admire it. You need all the concentration you can muster not to give in to the temptation to put your foot on the ground. The asphalt seems to dart upward and reaches peaks of 16%. After the first effort you can take a break, but then it’s back to climbing. At Baita Regolina, the road narrows to look back at the sky; you can sure feel the jolts, but metre after metre you climb farther up towards the finish line.  Two hairpin turns to get you ready for the hardest stretch, a straight path that never seems to end - almost a thousand metres with a slope of up to 17 percent –then the climb becomes softer and at last you reach the finish line and the majesty of the Torri del Vajolet.

With modern gears you can sure feel the fatigue, but it's nothing if you think of what Francesco Moser, Bertoglio and Gimondi had to work with. In the great stage of the Giro of 1976, Gimondi lost the pink jersey on this climb, but resisted attacks from runners-up and won the Giro in the end. Today only the final stretch of 200 meters recalls those heroic times. What remains of them is the strain and the ultimate satisfaction.
