Winter - Snow sports

The 3Tre in Madonna di Campiglio was the first Italian race to become part of the World Cup alpine skiing circuit, a prestigious event that, in December, opens the doors to a long series of winter sports events across Trentino. For several years now, the men's and women's European Cup competitions have been held "at home" in Pozza di Fassa (M), Folgaria (M), and Andalo (F) between December and January. They always take place in the first few months of the year.

For a few years now, the men’s and ladies’ European Cup downhill skiing events have been taking place in December in the towns of Pozza di Fassa and Andalo.

Between January and February, Trentino welcomes a host of Nordic skiing events starting with the Tour de Ski in the Val di Fiemme and its spectacular final climb up the Monte Cermis.

Cross-country skiing has never been the same since the introduction of the Marcialonga di Fiemme e di Fassa, one of the mass events most highly anticipated by narrow-ski aficionados: 70 kilometres of classic cross-country skiing between Moena and Cavalese. For a few years now, in the international calendar of Nordic skiing events we also find the Viote Monte Bondone Nordic Ski Marathon which takes place along the circuits of the cross-country skiing centre of Monte Bondone overlooking Trento.

At the beginning of January the Ciaspolada takes place, a major European appointment for snowshoe fans which attracts an average of over 6,000 participants between simple enthusiasts and trained athletes. From January and up to April, the Trentino mountains, from the Brenta Dolomites to the Lagorai, are stage to important competitive ski mountaineering events such as the La Sportiva Epic Ski Tour, the Sellaronda Ski Marathon, the Brenta Ski Alp Race and the Dolomites Cup Circuit.

Spring - Great cycling, regattas and motocross

Cycling and sailing and windsurf regattas are protagonists of this Trentino sporting season. The Giro d’Italia will be passing through again in 2019 with a number of challenging stages through high mountain passes across the Dolomites.

An exquisite anticipation to the Giro is offered by the fourth edition of the Tour of the Alps which, since 2016, has taken the place of the Melinda Giro del Trentino and takes place in April on the roads of Trentino, Alto Adige and the Tyrol in Austria. In July we have the Leggendaria Charly Gaul, one of the most prestigious international long distance uphill cycling races.

Gritty and thrilling: two words to describe what every year the Trentino MTB circuit, through a series of single track and off-road events, leaves etched in your mind. Five appointments for all tastes, from fans of tough uphill routes to those who prefer gentler slopes, that leave competitors and spectators alike with an unforgettable experience.

In spring, in the mild climate offered by Lake Garda, the season of sailing and windsurfing regattas takes off thanks to the regular winds that blow between Riva del Garda and Torbole. International and European contests of the more popular sailing and windsurf classes are permanent fixtures in the calendar that runs on until November.

The 4th leg of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship is held at the fascinating Pietramurata circuit every April. Champions of MXGP, MX2 and European 125 and 250 race in the Ciclamino Motocross circuit.

Summer - Great athletes at work in the Dolomites

Fresh mountain air, a proven infrastructure and the climatic conditions have transformed Trentino into one of the most sought-after destinations for teams and athletes of the highest level for their summer training. The most notable of these are football teams: a number of top division Italian and European clubs choose Trentino every summer for pre-season training.

The Basketball and Volleyball Federations have also chosen Trentino for the summer retreats of the Italian national teams, in Pinzolo and Cavalese respectively.

Another way to appreciate the mountains in summer is running uphill along the steeper and more gruelling trails etched across the Dolomites, and then rushing downhill at break-neck speed to the finish line. The sport of mountain running is, first and foremost, all about testing oneself and along the Trentino peaks the challenges grow with every season. The Trentino Dolomites host various events in this discipline, one of the most important of which is the Dolomites Sky Race, with both starting and finish lines in the main square of Canazei in the Val di Fassa. The Dolomiti di Brenta Trail both starts and finishes in the town of Molveno after a gruelling 64 kilometres across the Brenta Dolomites.

Trentino is also the land of Mountain Bike: the “Provincial Network of MTB Routes” includes over 330 itineraries with different levels of difficulty, selected in each of the 14 tourist districts that consider the needs of bikers and hikers. In August Val di Sole hosts the UCI MTB World Cup: A long weekend of competitions between Downhill, Cross Country, and Four Cross.

Autumn – Free climbing, marathons and athletics

Free climbing has undergone a true boom in recent years and will become a new sporting discipline at the 2020 Olympic Games. A fundamental input to this growing phenomenon has been offered by the Rock Master event which has been taking place in Arco since 1986. An appointment that attract thousand of enthusiasts, spurred on by the chance of catching a glimpse of the world’s greatest free climbers in action. Towards the end of summer, the city of Rovereto hosts the Palio della Quercia, the oldest national athletics meeting in Italy, which is a truly enjoyable and lively event with some top level guest athletes from around the world. At the end of September, the Trentino Running Festival gathers long-distance and half-marathoon specialists to the city centre. Between October and November we move to Lake Garda, host both to the International Lake Garda Marathon which winds its way from Malcesine to the beaches of Torbole and the Garda Trentino Half Marathon.
