Homage to Astor Piazzolla

This inaugural concert uses space and time as threads in its rich tapestry, tightly sewing up the geographical distance between the Baltic Sea and the Mar de la Plata as well as the passage of the years: 100 since the birth of Astor Piazzolla, 25 since the founding of the Kremerata Baltica.

It has also been 25 years since Maestro Gidon Kremer dedicated his first musical homage to Piazzolla, recognising him as an inspirational musician who utterly revolutionised the Argentinian tango.

On Malga Canvere’s natural stage, where the pure white peaks of the Pale di San Martino stretch towards the sky, this event is imbued with fresh life and becomes a dialogue between a diversity of styles, languages, and the features shared by the classical tradition and an informal folk style. This back-and-forth is reminiscent of the colgadas y volcadas of a smooth and well-choreographed dance, becoming a music which transcends thought and becomes emotion, as Jorge Luis Borges would put it.

Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica will lead us on a journey through the music of Piazzolla, revisiting both his own works and those of his contemporaries and not forgetting some of the genre’s most defining hallmarks, such as the bandoneon played by Arne Glorvigen, joining the orchestra for the occasion.
