Total distance: 10.9km

How to arrive
Go up to Passo Santa Barbara from Val di Gresta or from Bolognano (Arco). Turn at the fountain at the pass, abandoning the road that goes downhill (to the north). Follow these signs to the car park near the no thoroughfare sign.

Introduction

This classic snowshoe tour of the area goes up the west side of Monte Stivo along the extensive grass-covered slope to the peak, which is reflected in the waters of Lago di Garda. There is a spectacular contrast between the deep blue lake and the pure white snow that covers this summit. This tour of southern Trentino is surely not to be missed.

Locations

Località Sant'Antonio (1219m); Malga Stivo (1768m); Rifugio Marchetti (2009m); Monte Stivo (2059m).

Itinerary
Starting at the car park, go along the trail where there is a no entry sign on the left that marks a horse enclosure. The trail leads to the meadows situated above the initial stretch of wood.
When you get to the meadows, go along the same trail to the left northwards for just under 100 metres, as far as the sign that indicates the fork on the right to Monte Stivo.
The trail begins to ascend along the south-western side of Monte Stivo and then goes back into the wood again. Continue along several hairpin bends and a very steep stretch through the dense wood. There is often no snow along this last tract due to the dense wood.
After this steep stretch, you come out just above the wood into the large meadows that cover the upper part of the summit of Monte Stivo.
If the trail is well-groomed, you can usually go on as far as Malga Stivo (1768m). Go past this alpine dairy and, without having to keep to a marked track, continue up to the crest on the right of the mountain refuge. Do not go too far to the left towards the cableway, as there is a risk of avalanches detaching.
When you reach the crest, cross over to the left along a less pronounced slope to Rifugio Marchetti (2009m).
Then pass to the right of the mountain refuge and climb the last stretch of the mountainside, about 50m, to the cross at the summit and the scenic viewpoint. The return route follows the same trail back.

Notes

Go carefully along the stretch between Malga Stivo and the summit after heavy snowfall, as there is a risk of avalanches. The trail and the stretch of the meadow above the alpine dairy are often groomed with a piste basher by the manager of the mountain refuge.
