The gently climbing slope along the trail and the views to be enjoyed from its summit make it a destination for a large number of hikers in summer and winter
Mountain range: Monti Anauni
Starting point: Passo Mendola (1332m)
Total distance: 9.7km
Exposure: mainly north and west
How to arrive
Take the SS42 main road to Passo Mendola. From this mountain pass, follow the signs to Monte Roen (signposted "direzione Sud" i.e. to the south) and go on as far as Campi Golf. You can park in the chair-lift car park.
This simple trail follows the long ridge that goes southwards from Passo della Mendola as far as Monte Roen, the highest peak of the Monti Anauni range. The gently climbing slope along the trail and the views to be enjoyed from its summit make it a destination for a large number of hikers in summer and winter.
Campi Golf (1376m); Malga di Romeno (1771m); Monte Roen (2116m).
At the ski-lift car park at Campi Golf (1376m), take the chair-lift that goes up (about 200m) close to Rifugio Mezzavia. It takes about 10 minutes from the chair-lift to this mountain refuge.
Turn right at the top station of the chair-lift, and follow the easy trail that leads to Rifugio Mezzavia, situated to the south.
Pass by Rifugio Mezzavia and walk along the trail that goes into the woods, continuing along the western side of the ridge that separates high Valle di Non from Valle dell'Adige.
The trail becomes narrower and steeper after the mountain refuge. Follow the route of SAT trail no. 521. This stretch from Rifugio Mezzavia to Malga di Romeno may be difficult to see if it is not clearly marked.
Where the trail goes into a hollow, there is a sign that indicates a right turn along a gentle slope that continues southwards and eventually leads to a large clearing.
Here, there is a track that, continuing to the south, crosses the clearing.
When along the trail there is a change in the slope at the entrance to the woods, go straight on leaving the western side of the ridge and crossing over to the eastern side which overlooks Valle dell'Adige (not visible due to the dense wood).
Along this route, you pass by the stretch of woods along a gentle slope and then come out into the large meadow of Malga di Romeno, visible ahead to the south.
After passing by this alpine dairy, continue to climb the long north-west side of Monte Roen (ahead of you). The trail that leads up to the summit is clearly visible even when snow-covered. After crossing the steep stretch, the path follows a gentler slope and takes a wide turn to the left, leading you to the cross at the summit of Monte Roen situated to the south-east.
The return route retraces the steps of the outward hike.
It is a well-groomed trail even when it snows, as it is a very popular route.
Those who wish to continue to a higher altitude can climb up along the edge of the ski slope to get to the top station of the chair-lift on foot (a further rise of 200m).
