Col Santo – Rifugio Lancia
Mountain range: Pasubio
Starting point: Località Giazzera (1092m) - Vallarsa
Total distance: 14.6km
Exposure: mainly west, south-west
How to arrive
Take the SS46 (Del Pasubio) main road from Rovereto to Vallarsa along the right side of the valley (ascending on the left). Follow the signs to Trambileno - Pian delle Fugazze. After about 3km, turn left following the signs to Toldo, Moscheri and Boccaldo, and then to Rifugio Lancia. Go along the narrow road that leads to Giazzera (1092m - a clearing), where there is a car park and a few houses (about 12km from Rovereto). There is also a small car park just up from this hamlet (it is advisable to be equipped with snow chains).
This extremely interesting snowshoe tour crosses the western segments of the Pasubio mountain chain. It is a technically easy trail but quite long; therefore it should only be undertaken by well-trained hikers. The route goes through a highly attractive, solitary and wild environment that offers great pleasure. The sweeping views of the peak accompany the warmth and charm of hospitable Rifugio Lancia, also open in winter.
Località Giazzera (1092m); trail no. 132; Prati di Pazul (1450m); Bait del Marisa (1556m); Alpe Alba; Col Santo (2112m); Sella dei Col Santi; Rifugio Lancia (1824m); Malga Cheserle (1402m); trail no. 101; Località Giazzera (1092m).
Trail no. 101 starts at a small group of houses in Giazzera and immediately ascends a fairly steep slope. This allows you to take a short cut across some hairpin bends and arrive at the forest track above. From there, the trail leads to Rifugio Lancia. You soon come to a fork (SAT trail no. 132), which leads to Pazul, where you turn left (eastwards) and ascend along the steeper forest track.
Following this trail, you get to the plateau above (1415m - Praterie del Pazul), then head right (to the south-east), passing by Bait del Marisa (this mountain hut is closed) and continuing along the usually well-groomed trail, which crosses the meadows above.
Continue in this way, climbing up the broad ridge of Alpe Alba. The grass-covered plateau winds to the left, forcing the trail to pass close to Doss dell'Anziana (east). This leads to the prominent wide ridge north-west of Col Santo, which you must cross to get to the summit (2112m - with a cross) of Col Santo. Here you can enjoy great views of the Pasubio, Catena del Baldo, Bondone and Brenta ranges.
At the summit, go southwards, roughly following summer trail no. 131 but staying further to the left to avoid some disconnected stretches (the trail is usually well-groomed and clearly visible). Go on as far as the saddle between Col Santo and Col Santino (on some maps marked as Sella dei Col Santi). This route leads down to easier ground (south-eastwards) along a sort of channel, from where the mountain refuge is clearly visible. Once you have descended, turn right to Rifugio Lancia (1824m) - also open in winter.
At the mountain refuge, follow the long forest track westwards, taking short cuts across a series of hairpin bends where possible, keeping to the well-groomed trails. Another groomed trail takes you back to the car park at Giazzera.
Check the avalanche bulletin and evaluate the snowpack in the area. The stretch that is most exposed to avalanches is just below Sella del Col Santo.
When the snow is very hard-packed, the stretches that cross over or descend may become quite difficult to tackle with snowshoes; therefore it might be a good idea to carry a pair of crampons with you.
