ALTISSIMO DI NAGO 2079 m.
Sealskins on the sunny Mediterranean snows of the Garda area
The sun always shines in Riva del Garda, warming up the air even in the depths of winter.
Altissimo di Nago - when viewed from the small port of Riva - seems almost inaccessible at a first glance. The snow that caps it each winter endows it with a certain aura of mystery. It is also one of the most beautiful and popular ski-mountaineering destinations in southern Trentino. With its moderate slope and regular climbs, the refuge on the peak is easy to reach and offers breathtaking views. Moreover, it is always open, even on weekdays during the winter.
To reach it, you have a number of options. However, the easiest, quickest, and safest is indubitably to climb up the south-eastern side from San Giacomo - a small town found at 1200 m on the Altopiano di Brentonico.
Park your car near Hotel S. Giacomo and follow the signs of the summer itinerary to Rifugio Damiano Chiesa. The climb is fairly relaxing and relatively easy from the start. However, a bit more effort is required when you make your way past the woods on the path - that may be iced over at times - that takes you definitively onto free, open ground. Here, the striking views embrace Val Lagarina and the gorgeous round forms of the Altissimo.
With its regular slope and its few steeper sections, this itinerary will take you to Malga Campo at 1635 m. From the plain of the mountain dairy, you will be able to see the itinerary in its entirety. Simply follow the view along the crest as it bends in a half-curve towards south-west and takes you directly to the peak.
Take a break at the refuge, where you are guaranteed to find a warm welcome and some excellent cooking. Here, standing at 2059 m, you are only 20 m away from the peak of the Altissimo, which is a must if you want to enjoy the dazzling views of the splendour of Lake Garda.
