This panoramic structure is located on a sloping meadow overlooking the beautiful Folgaria - Francolini - Fondo Grande hollow. It can be reached in several ways. Either by simple walks or, even easier, with the ski lift that starts in Francolini.

Author’s recommendation

The mountain hut offers several possibilities in terms of access, giving anyone the chance to reach the facility, even if you are a bit out of shape or not used to walking.

Turn-by-turn directions

The following is a description of the walk from Passo Sommo. Further down you will also find alternatives ways to arrive.

From Passo Sommo:

On foot, following the comfortable forest road, on a slight incline, with directions for “Rifugio Stella D’Italia” and “Forte Sommo Alto” (this road is not open to traffic). Time: about 1 hour - cumulative elevation gain about 200 m - 3.6 Km (GPS track).

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
From Costa locality:
Reach Negheli locality (near the ski lift facilities) and then Maso Spilzi, the Ecchen biotope where, on the left, you can follow the path that leads to the “Passo Sommo - Rifugio Stella d’Italia” forest road, mentioned above, at the point of the former WWI guard station. Once you have reached the forest road, you follow a comfortable climb up to the mountain hut. Time: about 1:20 hours - cumulative elevation gain about 350 m.

From Francolini locality:
With the ski lift facility, open every Sunday in June and then every day from the beginning of July to 1 September.
With a walk from the centre of the town, follow the CAI trail marked 124, which is rather steep. Time: about 1 hour - cumulative elevation gain about 350 m.

From Passo Coe:
Walking along the forest road (closed to traffic), with a slight and very short initial climb, after which it is all either flat or downhill. Follow the directions for “Passo Sommo”. Pass by the Rifugio Camini and follow the main road. Time: about 40 minutes - cumulative elevation gain about 40m.

From Fondo Grande locality:
Behind the “Bar da Baffo”, you take the connecting road that comes from the Francolini slopes and then climb the slope itself on a little road until the mountain hut. Time: about 50 minutes - cumulative elevation gain about 200m.

From Fondo Piccolo locality:
From the subway beneath the “La Baita” hotel, take the connection that travels down from the “Piz Sommo Alto”. When it meets the “Passo Coe - Rifugio Stella d’Italia” road, turn left. Time: about 40 minutes - cumulative elevation gain about 100 m.
