Author’s recommendation

If you have the opportunity to stay overnight at the mountain hut, don’t miss the chance to try one of the fantastic ring routes that develop around the Roda di Vael.

Turn-by-turn directions

Starting from the parking area in Valate, where you leave your car, you walk along the mule track that climbs directly following the trail markings for the Rifugio Roda di Vael - Rifugio Paolina direction. You quickly gain elevation until a fork in the road at 1840 m asl.

Here, you continue on trail 552 in the direction of Rifugio Paolina, being careful to leave trail 548 - which leads to the Roda di Vael - on the right.

The path climbs diagonally up the western faces of Punta Masarè. At 1980 m asl, you reach another fork, where you go right, continuing to follow trail number 552. With a steep, but short, winding path you reach Rifugio Paolina, which is clearly visible.

You return along the same route.

N.B.: The mountain hut can also be reached comfortably from Carezza, just below Passo Costalunga, with the ski lift facility (1 direct section).

Getting there

SS48 delle Dolomiti coming from Val di Fiemme, and then SS241, or directly on SS241 coming from Bolzano - Val D’Ega. You leave your car in the parking area in Valate, located a few hundred metres before the pass, on the Vigo di Fassa side.

Parking

“Valate” Parking area (1752 m), located a few hundred metres before the pass, on the Vigo di Fassa side.
