At the solitary Fort of Someda
In the realm of Moena Fairy, dreams, and tales of war and peace, there stands a fort whose walls have witnessed history, though never shaped it through weapons. Yet still, they remember.
The walk to the meadows of "I Ronc" is an adventure through the storied and turbulent paths of history. Amidst the proud, silent rocks of the Dolomites, along the lines once fortified by Austro-Hungarian defences, lies a fort that escaped the ravages of war. Built in 1898, Fort Someda was already considered outdated by 1915. Clad in moss and wild grasses in summer, and draped in soft snow through winter, it lends a sense of timelessness to this walk along the "Rif de Sèn Pelegrin" stream. The structure is almost a two-storey granite cube with reinforced concrete barrel vaults, standing protected by a wide, deep moat and still bearing its original iron door. Once equipped with cannons, machine guns, and other artillery, it housed eight officers and 146 soldiers. However, at the outbreak of the war, the fort was deemed obsolete. Today, it stands as a reminder of a past that divided, and later united, peoples who traversed roads of breathtaking beauty. Take a moment to appreciate them as you walk forward, today, in the freedom of an unbounded view.
