Avéz del Prinzep
Europe's highest silver fir
It was 54 meters high, it had a circumference of 4 m and a diameter of 1.5 meters, the estimated age was 250 years
The giant has fallen. We are sorry to report unfortunate news of the silver fir tree, known as Avéz del Prìzep, which collapsed on a strong windy day.
It was a very well-known tree because of its unique properties and was celebrated both by locals and visitors. They came from everywhere to admire and photograph the tree, a symbol of the Alpe Cimbra mountain community.
Nature wasn’t very kind either with this Giant: a huge ants nest in the trunk was eating the tree from inside making it less stable and contributing to collapse. It was 54 meters high and was 250 years old, considered the highest silver fir in Europe.”
What remainf of this monumental tree is accessible through a marked path, leaving the Malga Laghetto parking lot.
The name Avéz del Prìzep comes from a popular legend, according to which the big tree once belonged to the community chief of Luserna / Lusérn, nicknamed Prìnzipe.
