Arte Sella

A forest where nature and art blend together

Stones, logs and leaves come to life, and the impossible becomes reality

Arte Sella is an international contemporary art event launched in 1986, held in the meadows and forests of Val di Sella. Since 1996 the Arte Sella project has developed along a forest road located on the southern slope of Mount Armentera, thus creating an ideal route called ArteNatura (Art Nature) along which visitors can admire the art works while enjoying the special beauty of the location.
All works are three-dimensional seeing that they are created from stones, leaves, branches or logs, with the only occasional use of objects, materials or artificial colours. Once the event is closed, many works are left in their place to gradually become part of the life cycle surrounding them, while others start their journey towards museums, art galleries and various exhibition spaces in Italy and abroad.

The Tree Cathedral
Born from the mind of the Lombardy artist Giuliano Mauri, this is the main project of the 2001 edition of Arte Sella. It is located near the Malga Costa mountain dairy and is the size of a veritable gothic cathedral. It consists of 3 naves formed by 80 columns of intertwining branches, 12 metres high and 1 metre in diameter. Inside each one grows a hornbeam sapling. The cutting and pruning planned for the next few years are aimed at creating a real "Tree Cathedral".

Malga Costa offers exhibition spaces hosting art installations in what was once a cattleshed. This new exhibition space and cultural venue has been for quite a few years now one of the structures of the Arte-Natura project that lends itself to the multiple activities of Arte Sella. Another exhibition space is located also in Borgo Valsugana.
