Chiesa di S. Vigilio e Convento dei Francescani
The Church of St. Vigil and the Convent of the Franciscan Fathers feature a precious artistic complex.
Located in Cavalese, in the middle of Val di Fiemme, the Church of Saint Vigil and the Franciscan Convent are of great interest - they both house important paintings of the Fiemmese School. The church features a steep two-pitched roof covered with wooden tiles and an ample tympanum on its main façade with an open-worked Lorraine cross. It hosts three 17th century wooden altars featuring the sober Franciscan style, as well as numerous paintings and canvases depicting Franciscan Saints. A chiaroscuro painting can be admired in the choir behind the main altar. The orchestra at the back of the church harks back to 1878 and includes an organ by brothers Rieger. The cloisters contain a number of large wall paintings as well as 35 17th-century etched coppers, narrating the stories of the Franciscan martyrs. The convent hosts an excellent picture gallery featuring Fiemmese painters.
