The "Forest Trail": geology, legends and history
On the footprints of the "Devil of the Dolomites". Easy guided excursion for families from Ciampedìe to the refuges at Vajolet
Taking the "Forest Trail" we go towards Gardeccia, entering the legends and the geologic phenomena that have made this mountains throughout the centuries. Once reached Gardeccia, we will walk on the footprints of one of the most famous Italian alpinists, Tita Piaz, who in summer 1898, yet before turning twenty, entered the history of alpinism by climbing - alone - the Winkler Tower. The fame of this achievement passed through the national borders. In 1903, Tita married Marietta Rizzi, daughter of the manager of Rifugio Vajolet. He would often work as a mountain guide, accompanying even some important personalities, among which King Albert I of Belgium in the first years of the Twentieth Century. He would open about fifty new "routes", 32 of them on the peaks of Val di Fassa, 16 on the Eastern Dolomites and two in the Kaisergebirge chain (Austrian Tirol). Tita Piaz has been the main promoter of the construction, in 1933, of the refuge Re Alberto, at 2,621 mt, at the foot of the Vajolet Towers. In 1947, he climbed for the last time the Winkler Tower, his favourite one among the Vajolet Towers in the group of Catinaccio. He passed away on August 6th, 1948, after a simple fall by bike.
