Giro d'Italia 2022
Saturday 28th May, the pink race chooses San Pellegrino, Pordoi and Fedaia passes for the determining portion of the whole Giro
Last year, due to bad weather conditions, the passage on Fedaia and Pordoi passes was cancelled. But the Giro doesn’t give up and edition 105 comes back to Val di Fassa with its most exciting stage: Belluno-Passo Fedaia (Marmolada). The pink race takes place between 6th and 29th May 2022, starting from Hungary (3 stages) and then resuming from Sicily and climbing up Italy ‘till reaching the Dolomites area. In particular, portion number 20, on Saturday 28th May, starring the valley with three of its most renowned passes, has this programme: departure from Belluno with a brief detour along Valle del Piave between Sedico, Santa Giustina and Certosa di Vedana, entry in Valle del Cordevole, which gets climbed up through Agordo and Cencenighe. Afterwards, begin of the three final climbs with San Pellegrino Pass (1918 metres, gradients above 15% after Falcade), followed by Pordoi Pass, 2022’s Cima Coppi with 2239 metres of altitude, and lastly Fedaia Pass (2057 metres), at the foot of the Queen of the Dolomites: Marmolada.
The pink race will start from Hungary, on Friday the 6th of May with an in-line stage, from Budapest to Visegrad, and will arrive in Verona on Sunday the 29th of May, just like in 2019, when Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz triumphed inside the Arena.
An important comeback of the Giro in Val di Fassa where, on the 24th of May 2017, Canazei was stage finish and, the following day, Moena was stage start. The roads and passes of the valley, in particular Passo Pordoi, house of a monument dedicated to Fausto Coppi and of Gilberto Simoni’s bike, contributed on several occasions to the success of the Giro and of the best international bikers.
