Giro d’Italia 2021

Val di Fassa turns pink again for the 104th edition of the Giro d’Italia, with a passage on May 24th, a rest day on May 25th and a departure on May 26th

ATTENTION: The opening of cultural and tourist sites, access to them, to public transport and to the services described in these pages is governed by the containment measures put in place by the government authorities and the Autonomous Province of Trento to deal with the COVID-19 health emergency. The rules may vary over time and provide for the application of different security measures — from closure, to social distancing, to the mandatory use of personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks. We therefore ask you to consult the section Travelling safely on this website and to contact the managers directly for updated information on how to gain access.

The 104th Giro d’Italia will pass through and start from Canazei, during two different stages. Add a rest day and here you are, the spotlights enlighten the Val di Fassa from May 24th to 26th, 2021. The "Pink Race", starting on May 8th from Turin and ending on May 30th in Milan, experiences some of the most important moments of its third week when, through ascents and descents on the mountain passes, the race gets to an end.

The 16th stage "Sacile - Cortina d’Ampezzo", on May 24th, is the hardest of the whole tour. 212 km through the Dolomites, with an altitude gap of 5.700 metres and 3 consequent ascents (Fedaia, Pordoi and Giau), passing through the villages of Penìa and Canazei.

After passing through the arrival line in Cortina (city of the 2026 Olympics), the teams will move to Canazei in the evening where they will rest on May 25th.

The 17th stage "Canazei - Sega di Ala", on May 26th, goes down through the valley of Fassa and Fiemme to become more demanding along the last 50 km with the long ascents to San Valentino Pass and to Sega di Ala. Length: 193 km, altitude gap: 3.400 m.

The Giro comes back to Canazei, which last hosted the arrival of a stage on May 24th, 2017, when Moena hosted the departure on the day after, instead. Through the years, the roads of the valleys and its passes - in particular the Pordoi Pass which hosts a monument dedicated to Fausto Coppi and also a bike of the Gilberto Simoni (native of Trentino) - have often brought success and fame to the Giro and to the best bikers in the world.
