Fiorenzo Zeni's project stems from his intention to pay tribute to the great saxophonists who have made this instrument famous and unique in the history of jazz, from the 1920s to the present day.
The panorama of prominent saxophonists of the last century who have made the sax a famous symbol is wide and rich in talent, some better known than others.
It is impossible to mention them all in one concert, but we can nonetheless embark on a fascinating journey to discover the personalities who profoundly influenced the development of jazz music during the 20th century. This journey will take us through different eras and styles, starting with 1920s dixieland with the exceptional Sidney Bechet.
We will continue through the 'Swing' era with artists such as Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and the incomparable saxophone of Johnny Hodges, and then dive into the 'Cool Jazz' years with figures such as Paul Desmond, Lee Konitz and Gerry Mulligan. Advancing through the history of jazz, we will reach the musical revolution of Be-Bop with the undisputed genius Charlie Parker, and then explore the world of Hard Bop with the incredible Sonny Rollins and the modal of John Coltrane.
Our journey will finally reach more modern times, where we will meet the virtuosos Michael Brecker and Joshua Redman. Fiorenzo Zeni will play the various chosen pieces using the full range of saxophone sonorities, i.e. soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax.
