Feast in "Turchia" district
Legends, craft and culinary traditions come alive for two days in "Turkey"'s historic quarter
After years of stop, the feast in "Turchia" returns in a big way, from 5 to 6 August in one of Moena's most characteristic historical districts. The name is linked to a legend passed down orally from generation to generation. It is said that after the defeat of the Turks in Vienna in 1663, a soldier, trying to return to his homeland, crossed the San Pellegrino Pass, but fell exhausted near the last house of the Moena district. The infidel was rescued and fed. The event caused such a stir that the inhabitants of the district were called "Turks". In fact, in Strada de Turchia, there is the fountain of the Turk, built in 1922 with a capital formed by a head with Arab features and decorated with a crescent moon and star. As tradition dictates, the festivities begin on Saturday afternoon, 5 August, at 5 p.m., with the grand procession opened by the sultan of the district who, accompanied by his loyal soldiers, in red and white uniforms, and the colourful odalisques, will parade through the streets of the centre. Did you know that the costumes and participation in the parade is reserved for residents of the ward only? Turkey is also a celebration of Moena's best craft and gastronomic traditions, thanks to the many stalls set up by local associations, with plenty of music and entertainment for all ages. Strolling through the alleys, you can admire the rustic wooden "tabià" (from the Ladin word for barns), inside which sculptors and craftsmen demonstrate their artistic skills.
