Area Faunistica Spormaggiore
Catch a close-up view of the last brown bears in Spormaggiore wildlife sanctuary.
Near Spormaggiore, at about 7 km from Andalo, there is an equipped sanctuary for the brown bear, established in connection with a conservation project by the local Wildlife Musuem. Covering an area of approximately 7,000 m2, the complex is located near Castel Belfort and is particularly suited to the living conditions of several European brown bears in captivity.
Opened in 1994, the sanctuary consists of a mixed forest of white fir and beech, with a thick undergrowth of shrubs and grasses. Crossed by a brook, which forms little natural waterfalls, the area is all safely gated to protect visitors, and features a special section with dens, where the bears can rest during the day and hibernate in winter. A CCTV circuit, with infrared cameras, is used to monitor the bears in the wintertime.
