Umberto Petrin, is a truly comprehensive artist, considered to be one of the best pianists at an international level. As well as his musical career, he is interested in contemporary poetry, contributing to literary magazines and publishing a number of stories. Both as a leader and a guest of important developments and events he deals with every style of jazz right through to free jazz. His artistic sensitivity led him to undertake various fusion projects involving improvised music and other arts including poetry, videoart and performance art, collaborating with some of the best Italian poets such as Luigi Pasotellu, Milo de Angelis, Tomaso Kemeny , and Giovanni Fontana (who dedicated his sonic poem “Frammenti d’ombre e di penombre” – Fragments of shade and shadows 1999 to Petrin).
He performs alongside pioneers such as Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Anthony Braxton, Lester Bowie, Enrico Rava, Tim Berne, Paul Lovens, Paul Rutherford, Han Bennink, Willem Breuker, Marc Ducret, Michael Moore etc., many of whom he also records albums with, and he is considered by critics to be one of the best performers of the music of Thelonious Monk.
His numerous collaborations for theatrical pieces involve him working alongside Stefani Benni, Lella Costa, and David Riondino. In 2018 he worked with the Brazilian singer Rosàlia De Souza both as pianist and arranger and composer of
the original tracks. He has recorded more than 70 CDs to date, many of which have been acclaimed by critics.
