Cima Scalieret, located to the south of Catinaccio d’Antermoia, dominates from the east the upper Valle del Vajolet. It can be reached via a marvellous circular route passing by the Vajolet and Passo Principe mountain huts and skirting the base of the majestic Catinaccio d’Antermoia, up to the summit along the broad north ridge; from here, the last stretch of the circular route takes you along the “Sentiero Don Guido” trail, via the “Passo delle Pope” and back to the Vajolet. This awe-inspiring itinerary penetrates the heart of the Gruppo del Catinaccio massif, allowing you to discover the most important peaks of the range, such as Torri del Vajolet, Catinaccio, Cima Vajolet, Punta Emma, Catinaccio d'Antermoia and Dirupi di Larsech.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Rifugio Gardeccia climb uphill along trail No. 546, which crosses the beautiful meadows at the foot of the south-east wall of Catinaccio and then continues in the direction of the “Rifugio Vajolet” and “Preuss Hütte”.

Following this dirt track you reach the base of the “Porte Neigre”, the forepart of the mountain on top of which you can make out the profile of the impressing Rifugio Preuss.

The road climbs up rather steeply on the left, featuring a series of bends and rapidly rising in elevation, up to the flat area with the Vajolet and Preuss mountain huts at 2243 m. The two huts face each other, in a particularly charming part of the Dolomites.

Continue uphill towards the left, ignoring the fork that branches off along trail No. 542, which leads to the Re Alberto and Santner mountain huts. Continue along trail No. 584, which features rather regular gradients and a compact surface. You climb uphill via a series of ledges and the view here becomes more and more breathtaking as it opens up. A last little effort will lead you to Passo Principe, where there is a small characteristic mountain hut, a natural resting place. The view from up here towards the south is magnificent: the Val le del Vajolet appears hemmed in by multicoloured pinnacles and stunning shapes, such as the Torri del Vajolet and Catinaccio. From the pass continue along trail No. 584 skirting the base of the majestic Catinaccio d’Antermoia.

After a while you come to Passo D’Antermoia at 2770 m . Here you leave SAT trail No. 584 and take the trail that continues south in the direction of Cima Scalieret. This gently inclined trail has no SAT marking, but is well-beaten and clear. A series of little men figures and several signs mark the route, which runs on the broad north ridge of the peak and leads to the cross on top of the peak at 2889 m.

After resting on Cima Scalieret you can continue downhill southwards to “Passo delle Pope”. From here you take the “Sentiero Don Guido”, with clear red markings. From the pass, the trail turns west (to the right), descending to a broad expanse of gravel with a beautiful view over Valle del Vajolet and the mountain hut with the same name. Following the red marks, you descend via a ledge down to the base of a rocky rib. An oblique stretch to the right takes you back to Rifugio Vajolet and, from here, to the departure point.

Getting there

This itinerary starts at Rifugio Gardeccia, which is served by a convenient shuttle bus service from Vigo or Pera di Fassa; the latter towns can be reached along the “SS48 Valli di Fiemme e Fassa” national road.
