The Bedolpian recreational area is ideal for spending a day in the countryside. It can be easily reached by car and is criss-crossed by a range of easy paths that are suitable for families. This ring route takes you around the wooded hill that shields Baselga di Piné from the westerly winds. Apart from the initial stretch along a path, it follows dirt roads. The main natural-scientific attraction of this walk is potholes (called 'marmitte dei giganti' in Italian), i.e. cavities hollowed out in the porphyry rock as a result of glacial erosion. Further into the wood you reach Bellavista (a panoramic spot with a good view of Valle di Cembra), then Lake “delle Rane”. The Bedolpian site offers many opportunities for a rest: you will find various picnic areas (with benches and tables) not only near the lake, but also along the way.

Safety information

  • Prepare your itinerary beforehand
  • Choose an itinerary that suits your physical abilities
  • Choose suitable clothes and equipment
  • Check the weather forecast
  • Hiking by yourself is more risky; if this is the case, take a mobile phone with you
  • Leave information about your itinerary and your expected return time
  • If you are not sure about your itinerary, contact an Alpine Guide
  • Pay attention to signposts and directions that you find along your way
  • Do not hesitate in going back if you feel too tired
  • In case of emergency call 112

Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Equipment

Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.

What you should have in your rucksack:

  • water canteen (1L)
  • snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate)
  • First aid kit
  • windproof jacket
  • fleece
  • change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag)
  • make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers
  • hat
  • sun screen
  • sunglasses
  • gloves
  • whistle to attract attention in an emergency
  • emergency telephone number Mountain Rescue 112

Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains.

And finally... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views.

Turn-by-turn directions

Just after the Azienda per il Turismo (tourist office), branch off from the main road through Baselga onto Via Miralago and head for Ricaldo. At the next hairpin bend, turn left onto a small tarmac road. After about 30 m, you reach a crucifix: from here, proceed uphill along the side of a porphyry-paved water channel. After about 50 m, turn left into a path and after a very short climb, you can see on your right an example of pothole, i.e. a natural cavity hollowed out in porphyry rock. Such natural formations occur where large quantities of meltwater from a glacier and/or a river carry huge amounts of detritus (from sand to boulders) the eroding force of which is  powerful enough to hollow out channels or holes, sometimes even in such hard substrata as porphyry volcanic rock (although it must be said that such formations occur more frequently in the presence of limestone substrata). Where eddies appear, the rotating water and detritus slowly abrade the rock and create hemispherical hollows known as 'potholes'.After the pothole, you soon reach a forest road. Head north (towards the right) to the recreational and sports area of Lake “delle Rane”. This lake, which is actually just a small pond, provides a habitat to several types of amphibians and is therefore of relatively high local environmental significance. Numerous benches around the lake offer many opportunities for a rest. From the lake, it's only a short climb on a dirt road to 'Bellavista', a panoramic spot with a good view of most of the terraced landscape of Valle di Cembra. The last stretch of the ring route follows forest roads across woods of conifers which provide an ideal ground for healthy walks or jogs.

Getting there

By car: From either south or north, from the A22 Brennero motorway (from the south exit Trento south - north exit Trento north) or from the main Brennero road n. 12; continue on the Valsugana main road SS 47 towards Pergine Valsugana-Padova; when you reach the junction with the Altopiano di Piné road, turn off into this secondary road SP 83 known as the “di Piné” road. Search for route.
